The Siege of Toulon (28 August – 19 December 1793) was a military engagement during the French Revolutionary Wars. It followed a royalist rebellion in the city of Toulon which allowed Anglo-Spanish forces to occupy the city and its vital naval base.
The siege was undertaken by Republican forces to retake the strategically important port city from the royalist rebels and their British and Spanish allies. It's notable for marking the beginning of Napoleon Bonaparte's military career. As an artillery commander, his plan to capture key fortifications overlooking the harbor proved decisive.
The Republicans, initially under the command of Jean Carteaux, made little progress until Bonaparte arrived and proposed a daring strategy: capture the forts controlling the harbor's entrance. By capturing Fort Mulgrave (renamed Fort Napoleon), Republican artillery could threaten the British fleet, forcing them to evacuate.
The siege involved fierce fighting, particularly around the key forts. British, Spanish, and Neapolitan troops, along with royalist French soldiers, defended the city. However, the relentless Republican bombardment, directed by Bonaparte, took its toll.
Ultimately, the allied fleet was forced to withdraw, taking many royalist sympathizers with them. The Republican forces then entered Toulon, brutally suppressing the royalist rebellion and executing many of the rebels. The siege resulted in a significant victory for the French Republic and cemented Napoleon's reputation as a brilliant military strategist. The British burned or scuttled several French ships to prevent them from falling into Republican hands.
